Friday Newsletter

We have had a fantastic week and our brains are FULL of so many new ideas!

Science-
We made Venn Diagrams comparing animal and plant cells.

We tweeted our thoughts....

We did an experiment with vinegar and egg shells. Then we proved "concentration" with liquids using dyed water and corn syrup.

Math- We continued to learn about conversions, integers and comparing decimals.
We played a conversion card game.

Here are the target number results this week!

Just working on integers with our cell pals!

We plotted negative and positive temperatures
And we worked on the Mimeo with comparing decimals.

Reading- we started Theme 2 which means....new vocab!

New Reading Vocabulary to focus on:

survey- When you survey a place, you look around and consider it carefully
inquire- When you inquire about something, you ask for information about it.

Animal Cell Project

Cell Project:
The students will receive this information on Wednesday, and I have also been talking about it all week. I made an example for the kids, but I was hesitant, because I feel like I am limiting their creativity by showing them what mine looks like. So, be as creative as possible!!

This project is having the kids apply the functions of the cell to an everyday object. I chose to compare it to Pine Creek. For starters in the top left corner I said that the cell membrane was the walls, ceilings, and floor of Pine Creek, because both provide support and let good things in such as oxygen in the cell, and students for the school.
Below the "cell membrane" is the kitchen. This would be the ribosomes because this is where the proteins are made.

Are you kind of catching on now?

Basically the poster should include:
A Cell diagram
Pictures/drawings/Internet pictures of your comparison
A Title including the word "vs"
and the comparisons, either as a report pasted on, or an explanation next to each item.
Arrows pointing to the given object directed to the part of cell its being compared too.

That about sums it up! The project is worth 25 points. It will be due September 5th and their Science test over Chapter 1 is on the 7th.

If you have any questions, please email me.

August 27th

Monday we learned about integers, and what kind of words they would see in problems that would make it a positive or negative word. I have all the groups 4 numbers and they had to come up with a sentence where they would use that number- the pictures of some of their creative ideas are at the end of the blog!
one being a 49 foot mustache! (where do they get this?)

In science we did a scavenger hunt with animal cell vocab. As long as they are studying their match cards at home they will be golden! The Science test over Cells is September 7th. I am giving them a cell project tomorrow and that will be due the 5th. I already have had a couple of students hand their projects in because they knew they would be gone over labor day weekend. I will do a blog later today about the cell project so you will know how to help your child! :)

and they answer to the riddle "Whats your best feature?" Your smile! Thanks Hannah for the wonderful picture!
Now, my homeroom sharing their sentences!

They tweeted their sentences! Read a couple...they are a hoot!

And for reading we got in groups and I had them quiz each other on the forms of fiction and their vocabulary. Their reading test will be on Thursday (Both Mr. Nichols class and mine)

Upcoming dates!

Hello Parents!

Just a heads up:  I will be assigning a science project on Wednesday August 29th and will be due Wednesday, September 5th. If you are going out of town Labor day weekend, the students will have at least the weekdays to work on it. I have been giving examples during class every day, so they are very familiar with it. Some have even started to work on it! Ask your student about it! I have an example posted that they are able to look at.  I will also post a blog about it with more information for you!

Math Assessment over Conversions, Line Plots, Integers, Wednesday, September 5th

Science Assessment over Animal and Plant Cells, Friday, September 7th  (make sure they study their memory game for their vocab)

Reading Assessment over Maxx Comedy, August 30, and then we will jump right into a new unit on Friday. (This applies to mine, and Mr Nichols class)

Thank you SO much for all your support!

Those who handed in ALL their homework this week AND got a perfect score, received a "Miss Koch Scratch off card" Some won free pencils, picking the cell pal number, homework pass....there are so many more!!!
